When should I use a doe bleat?
A doe bleat and grunt is most effective from late pre-rut to post-rut. Remember, the secondary rut occurs a month after the peak of the first rut. The reason doe sounds are effective at this time is simple -- bucks are looking for does to breed. Follow the normal deer calling rules when using doe bleats or grunt calls.
Alternate between grunts and bleats during the rut to build a competitive environment. Grunts are most effective during the rut and are not used often outside of the rut. It doesn't hurt to breakup a slow day of hunting however by using a grunt call. A buck may hear the call and decide to run you out of his area.
Doe bleat calls are great for attracting all kinds of bucks or even other does, which makes it a very handy call if you're looking to fill the freezer with venison.
You can cold call by blowing two or three times every 30 minutes or so, varying from short to long grunts. A buck may not be in your area but by using deer calls like a grunt tube a buck may be inclined to checkout the sounds another buck is making in his territory.
In normal conditions, vibrations produced by walking in leaves and branches can conservatively travel 300-400 yards, and slight metal clanging (like when hanging stands and climbing sticks) up to a half-mile, all within a whitetail's audible frequency range.
The general rule of thumb is to use a short sequence of bleats or grunts about every thirty minutes or so. Call for about 30 seconds and then take a moment to observe any reactions. It's also helpful to start out on the softer side with a call, gradually increasing volume as needed.
Bleat calls like the Doe Bleat from Bone Collector are effective when combined with grunt calls for deer. The two combined sounds will trigger mature bucks to think that a hot doe is being pursued by a rival buck looking to take one of his does.
Estrus Bleats tell bucks that a doe is ready to breed. Whitetail, Blacktail, and Mule Deer can all respond quickly and dramatically to the quivering doe Estrus Bleat produced by THE Original CAN. This is, by far, the best call we know of to call in bucks during the pre-rut, rut, and post-rut.
Yes, deer are attracted to the odor of urine. Not just that from does in estrous, but also urine from other mammals – even you – in the fall. Biologists have told me that mammal urine is socially interesting to deer, and other mammals, but not distinguishable among species or even gender.
Hunters use a bleat call during the rut more than any other time. This call can lure a mature buck into thinking a doe is being pursued by a less dominate buck. Don't use your bleat call more then two or three times every 30 minutes.
When should you bleat and grunt?
Aggressive grunts are used to send a message to the other buck that, “Hey buddy I am king here, hit the trail.” Less aggressive sounds, like the “bawl,” are known for more social communication among whitetail. This sound is not distressed but more along the lines of a mature bleat; the sound one would hear from a fawn.
As for the doe, the bleat is the preferred social call. It, too, is used as a communication call to other deer, especially fawns. This is a sound that a doe will make so that the fawns always know her location. This call can also be made to relax other deer in the area.
